West LA PAL Martial Arts
We do not teach our students to fight. Instead, through the martial arts, we teach our students to remain calm and think clearly under pressure, to respect themselves and others, and to have the confidence to walk away from conflict. However, if they cannot avoid conflict, they will have developed the skills to protect themselves and others.

Martial Arts Influences:
The primary martial arts style practiced by West LA PAL is Danzan-Ryu Jujitsu. Danzan-Ryu Jujitsu originated in Hawaii and stresses self-defense, including judo-style throws, joint manipulations and grappling.
Beyond the physical elements of jujitsu, we explore the philosophy expressed in Professor H.S. Okazaki's Esoteric Principles of Judo. Our other influences include: BKF Kenpo Karate, Jun Fan and Filipino Martial Arts, Brazilian Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do and Within Arms Reach (WAR).

PAL CARE Program -- Women's Self Defense Seminars
West LA PAL presents women's self defense seminars featuring self-defense and empowerment experts Meredith Gold and Mike Belzer of R-A-W Power. PAL CARE teaches participants to be Confident, Aware, Ready and Empowered. PAL Care seminars are "hands on" classes where women and girls can:
»Practice situational awareness, verbal boundary setting and de-escalation skills in dynamic "role plays" that simulate a variety of real world encounters
»Learn simple, effective physical self defense techniques and practice them using the proven Adrenal Stress Scenario Training (ASST) method
»Experience the effects of an authentic adrenaline rush while defending themselves full-force and full-speed in a realistic scenario against a padded, mock assailant.
PAL CARE seminars are supported by community donations and are offered at no cost to female West LA PAL participants and female family members of West LA PAL participants. Contact us for more information on future PAL CARE seminars. For more information on the excellent programs offered by R-A-W Power, please click here.

West LA PAL Boxing
West LA PAL Boxing promotes fitness, discipline, and personal
accountability. The program builds confidence and self esteem, and
teaches skills that are essential to future academic and professional
success. West LA PAL Boxing participants learn to respect themselves and
their communities, and are less likely to get into "fights" outside the
gym because they have nothing to "prove".
Under the supervision of Coach Rudy Lopez, the West LA PAL Boxing
program provides an unique opportunity for the individual athlete. The
program emphasizes conditioning, footwork and training drills to develop
strong basic abilities. There are no shortcuts to success in boxing.
West LA PAL boxers train hard and feel an immeasurable sense of
accomplishment as their skills develop.

Youth Wrestling Clinic
Youth Wrestling Clinics
West LA PAL and the Harvard-Westlake Wrestling Team present regular youth wrestling clinics to introduce PAL participants to this excellent sport. The clinics have been attended by West LA PAL participants and local youth jujitsu programs and have been a great success. The H-W Wolverine Wrestlers lead the class through conditioning exercises, basic wrestling concepts and advanced techniques. Everyone looks forward to the exciting wrestling demonstration by members of the Wolverine squad and all participants have a chance to try competitive wrestling in a safe, supervised environment.
West LA PAL thanks the Wolverine Wrestlers for these excellent clinics and for their commitment to the youth of the LAPD West Los Angeles Division. Please check back regularly for more information on West LA PAL programs and clinics. If you would like to share your sport or martial art with West LA PAL, please click here to contact us.
